What is A Domain Name?
A domain name is a string of letters and numbers separated by periods (.) that is used to name organisations, individuals, computers and addresses on the net.
Basically your web name e.g. www.yourchosenword.com.au this is like a kind of business name registration for the web. Its an identification so someone knows who you are. You are purchasing the rights to use this name. In the case .com.au & .net.au names there are guidelines in applying for this type of domain name. It has to be linked to an ABN number and is checked over to make sure things are all above board before your registration is approved. This is why some people browsing in Australia consider a .com.au to be safer than just .com or .net because it has to be linked to an Australian Business.
You will need to purchase a domain name to publish your site on the web. It is similar to business name in the way it works, the registration fee that you initially pay for that domain name then only needs to be paid for to renew every 2 years.
